Woodsmoke FAQs

Where is Woodsmoke?

Woodsmoke is at Kingswood Campsite, just outside of Hancock, New York.

When is Woodsmoke 2012?

There are two, one-week long camps during the last two weeks of July. The camp begins on Sunday afternoon, and the kids are picked up on the following Saturday morning.

Week 1 is July 15 - July 21
Week 2 is July 22 - July 28

Who is eligible for Woodsmoke Camp?

Woodsmoke is open for all entering 5th through 12th grade in September 2012.

Who are the counselors?

Julie Wityk is the Woodsmoke Director and Registrar. Cynthia Price is back as Woodsmoke Program Director for 2012. The counselors come from a wide range of backgrounds, and all have a passion for Kingswood and sharing it with children. Counselors go through an extensive application, interview and training process prior to counseling at Woodsmoke, and many of our counselors and staff are Woodsmoke alumni.

What does the day of a Woodsmoke camper look like?

The non-stop action of a camper's day begins with the preparation of breakfast (first things first!). Woodsmoke campers are in charge of planning, preparing and cooking most of their own meals alongside their counselors. After breakfast is "morning watch", a time for campers to reflect on the message of the day.

From there, the 11th and 12th grade groups (Week 1) head off to work on P.E.T. vehicles. The 9th and 10th grade groups will work to rebuild the Hogan Dining Shelter that was destroyed by Hurricane Irene. (Week 1). The combined 9th through
12th grade groups will continue work on the Hogan Dining Shelter (Week 2).

The 7th and 8th graders will spend 3 mornings on small service projects. Other morning activities will include hiking and learning more about nature and the environment. (Week 1 and Week 2)

The 5th and 6th graders may spend their mornings on a hike, on a scavenger hunt, in the craft barn, or immersed in a number of different adventures. (Week 1 and Week 2)

After the morning activities, it is back to the campsite for lunch, followed by "F.O.B." (feet on bed), and then an afternoon of swimming and boating at the lake. Before heading back to their campsites, campers and counselors join in a brief chapel service each day.

In the campsite, cooking fires are built and the evening meal prepared by the campers. On Friday evening, the entire camp gathers under the Pavilion for a cookout prepared by Woodsmoke staff.
